Both ‘the mythic city’ and ‘the city at its limits’ were
interesting to read. Both helped us in seeing what different ways a particular
city can be seen in. a city is not just about the famous monuments or the
landmarks, its also about the feelings people have with the place, and many
times some small memories such as a simple bus/train ticket. Every object in a
place says something. I guess if we ask people on how they can connect
themselves with the city they live in, most of them will connect it through their
memories and wont connect it through the landmarks and the monuments.
The same can be seen in shivajinagar. People there are very
interested in their jobs and business and many don’t even care about the
landmarks in that place. Many people staying n shivajinagar don’t even know if
some of the landmarks actually exist there and this shows that feelings are
more important. We saw the same thing wen we did an exercise in the class in
which each one of us had to connect themselves to the city we live in through a
medium and most of them were feelings and small objects from the city.
A city might be made of bricks and concrete but it is
completed with feelings and memories. Just like people in Mumbai relate very
well to the film city and the local train, even people of shivajinagar relate
to many things depending on their occupation. Suppose for an old shop owner in
shivajinagar, old chair might be something which he connects to wen he thinks
of shivajinagar. Similar way each person has things he can relate to wen he
thinks of a particular place. And I guess we should find out more things people
relate to in shivajinagar.
Maybe doing an exercise in shivajinagar in which we should
ask people to say the first things that come to their mind wen they think about
shivajinagar. I am sure that the repies would be amazing.
