Mythic city: gyan
prakash talks of how he always fantasised about Mumbai, and even though hes
spent all his life in various cities he calls Mumbai the city of dreams. He
says that of all the cities that he has been to Mumbai holds exciting newness
and unlimited possibilities. He eventually talks about how Mumbai was then and
compares it to recent times. He stresses upon a very important part of the city
being cinema. And how cinema and media has influenced the way people think and
act. How cinema has made people accept and follow blindly. Then later he talks
of how politics plays a big role in our city. It is a city that possess
multicultural and how it seemed to coexist in the 1980s and how it is all corrupted
by the cynical politicians and businessmen in the 1990s. this particular
chapter tells us how nature and man brought about calamities in Mumbai just to
give it a shake and get people together. And Mumbai needs yet another to wake
the people up again.
What I personally feel is that it helped me understand how a
city functions better. What is the medium that can be used to persuade people
and influence them understand something better which will probably help us
designing the walk. While this book talks about how the city is multicultured I
related the same to shivajinagar. How they seem to co-exist but still have a
few controversies to sort amongst them. When we get into the history of shivajinagar
they experienced riots between Hindu’s and Muslim’s during 7th December
1986. And same with the city where in the year 1993, 12th march they
experienced bomb blasts. There is a lot of similarities between the two places
even where trade is concerned. Mythic city has helped me deepen my vision of
any city and changed my perspective of looking at it completely. How to engage
in activities, or how to converse with people.
City at its limits:
I had a great deal of trouble figuring out what this article was exactly - is
it, as the blurb suggests, an qualitative research aimed at exploring cultural
phenomena of Lima, based on the experiences of Daniela herself, who has returned to Lima after few
years, rather than the experiences of people living in lima. Is it an
understanding to Daniela’s native city, as she tries to unravel the history and
intricacies of the city. The book starts out with Daniela’s curiosity being stimulated
by a photo in the newspaper of a cleaner stripping in protest. Daniela is determined to find out who this woman is,
why she did what she did and to unpick the symbolism of this woman's actions -
how by divesting oneself of clothing, a woman can somehow empower herself and
turn the tables on her oppressors.
